Karate classes are 1 1/2 hours in length. In general, the first half of the class consists of warmup, stretching, and a focus on basics (blocks, kicks and punches). After a break, the second half can consist of kata drills, kihon kumite (pre-arranged sparring drills, often done with a partner), kumite (sparring) or other drills and exercises.
In all classes, regardless of whoever is leading the class, students are expected to pay attention, maintain discipline and do their best. It is neither humiliating nor embarrassing to be unable to do a specific drill, provided the student is trying. "Never give up" is an important lesson to learn in karate.
